At 3:00PM on 11/6/18, my beautiful 10 year old son had a CAT-Scan. He hadn't been feeling well, for four weeks with dizziness and some nausea in the mornings. As strong as he was he didn't tell us until last week. Donelle brought him to a pediatrician who scheduled tests including EKG and CAT Scan. Today we found out our amazing child has a brain tumor called medulloblastoma. Derek had emergency MRI followed by 5 hour surgery to remove the golfball sized tumor on 11/7/18.. One year ago in November I found out my wife had breast cancer and would need double mastectomy. I am about done with the month of Nobember. On 11/19/18 he has a spinal tap to assess if any cancerous cells have made their way into spinal fluid. He will also have chemotherapy port put in on that day. We are waiting call from team at Mayo Clinic in Rochester where Derek will undergo Proton therapy. Donelle and I will be rotating weeks with him in Rochester, a 4 hour drive from our home, so we can continue to have an income in the home. The community has rallied around Derek, but so much more help is needed. Derek is a great kid who loves baseball, the New York Yankees, the Denver Broncos, playing Video games on his X-Box 1 or WiiU, learning science and math (he wants to be a teacher some day), building with Lego's and playing board games with family and friends. He is an immediate friend to all that meet him. He has an old soul, a sarcastic lopsided grin, the eye rolls of someone who always is in on the joke, a heart that explodes with kindness and empathy and an amazingly sharp wit. Any help that is given will be greatly appreciated.
