About Itzel
A little bit more about Itzel and what is happening:
Itzel was diagnosed with Leukemia. She had been feeling sick for the past four weeks and we took her to the Emergency room on November 11, she was complaining she had pain in her left rib . She was seen right away because that pain came along with shoulder pain. At first the doctors thought the problem might be her spleen, so they performed x-rays, but the results came back negative. They concluded the problem was probably an inflamed chest wall that would go away on its own, so we went home with Ibuprofen for the pain. The next day, November 12, we went back to the ER for the same pain, this time her heart rate was slightly elevated so we got seen right away. They did a urine test, to check her kidneys, which came back negative, nothing in her urine to indicate something was wrong. They sent us home again with the same diagnosis. The next couple of days her pain got better, but she was having a hard time going up and down the stairs because her knee hurt. We continued giving her Ibuprofen for the pain, which seemed to helped.
After Thanksgiving break she went back to school (Monday November 26th ) and that day she complained her head hurt, but we just gave her some pain medication for the headache. Later that day I gave her a goodnight hug and kiss, and as I touched her, she felt very warm so I checked her temperature, which was 102.5. I kept her home from school for the rest of the week because the fever persisted. I took her to her pediatrician on Thursday of that week, Nov 29th, and they performed a flu test which came back positive for influenza, so she was given Tamiflu for 5 days. She started losing her color, looking pale and yellowish, something was definitely wrong.
Sunday came and she was feeling better, but still looked pale, but she insisted she wanted to go to school on Monday December 3. I gave her some ibuprofen for her headache and took the children to school. Around 9:30am I get a call from the school office; Itzel was crying because her head was hurting a lot. I went to pick her up and took her to the doctor to get checked again. Doctor came in, did an exam, and said her spleen and liver were tender. He told me not to worry, but I should take her to the ER right away, obviously I freaked out. He called to let them know we were heading there, so when we arrived to the ER, they put Itzel in a room right away and got some blood test done. The pediatrician came in and said a specialist would come in and talk to us.
I started to think so many things, I was so worried. Not even half an hour passed and the specialist came. As she was talking she said, in very low voice, "We think it might be Leukemia. We are going to do a bone marrow biopsy tomorrow." We went to conference room with two doctors, and she said to us it's not a "might " it's a "yes" she does have leukemia. Itzel has leukemia. The bone marrow biopsy is to see what type of leukemia she has. We didn't have enough time to process the news since we didnt want Itzel to see us crying . The next day when they did the biopsy everything went well, she got the PICC line done, we got the results and her official diagnosis was Acute lymphoblastic Leukemia. She is now going through weekly chemotherapy. We still have more to learn from her cancer. But with God by our side we will fight this cancer.
