About Julia
Julia has a very rare genetic cancer of her retinas. Retinoblastoma. Only 300 children are diagnosed yearly in the United States. In addition, Julia sits in the 10% of that 300 that is bilateral/genetic. Her many procedures include eye exams under anesthesia, laser treatment directly onto the tumors in her eyes, Intra Arterial Chemotherapy, MRI’s, & lab draws. She is monitored by her pediatric oncologist, pediatric ocular oncologist, and her NEW pediatrician. Julia sees the world specialist for Retinoblastoma, Dr. David Abramson in New York at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Abramson is extremely optimistic about Julia's prognosis for life, but at this point, Julia is not cancer free. Her tumors are still active and there is a high risk of her tumors having new growth. Please pray for no growth and no brain involvement.
Our journey started before we knew our world would be shattered into a million pieces. We noticed her right eye would become slightly "lazy" for mere moments/seconds starting as little as 3/6 months old, but our pediatrician (at the time) told me not to worry and at her 9 and 12 month visits I continued to voice my concern and again he verified all looked well with her and that developmentally she was on track and not to worry. Well at 15 months her left eye would occasionally "get lazy" too and we finally just needed answers and to not be brushed off.
She was just shy of 18 months when diagnosed with genetic bilateral Retinoblastoma. Her genetic type is spontaneous (not from chris or I). We found out on late Friday afternoon October 14th 2016 that our daughter has cancer in both eyes and is already blind in her right eye. We needed her to be seen immediately as the adult doctors at the Froedtert Eye Institute said her tumors were very severe. We did not know if the cancer had spread to her brain.
She may not see as well as you or I, or maybe she "sees" it even better, with her minimal vision in her left eye. We feel extremely blessed she is still with us. Our God and Dr Abramson (his team) have saved our little girl...we have a long bumpy road ahead, but with your encouragement and prayers it'll be more manageable! Thanks for reading and shining some love and light on Miss Julia!
